Welcome to my blog! I am a new mom of fraternal female twins and am myself an identical twin! I created this blog to help other parents of twins, have a place to share my stories, and give me some entertainment while nursing and dealing with the day-to-day life of parenting twins. I expect that being a twin will give me a different perspective to parenting twins than most people have. It's too soon to know at this point. My girls are only 5 1/2 weeks old but I will tell you having my mom help me has been a blessing since she has done this before!
I'm going to start by reflecting on my pregnancy. Here is a list of questions and comments that I constantly got while pregnant when people found out I was having twins.
"Oh twins! That is so wonderful. Do twins run in your family?"
Now this is a loaded question. Twins do happen to run in my family. I'm a twin, have twin cousins, my dad has triplet cousins and had twin uncles. But my twins happen to be IVF twins so I would answer yes and sometimes follow up with but this was IVF. Either way I answered I generally got "oh I thought twins skip a generation." This is an old wives tale.
"Wow, you look great for being pregnant with twins."
Again a loaded comment. Yes, likely meant as a compliment but I happen to have some food issues and was worried about not eating enough so everytime I got this comment the Jewish guilt of becoming a Jewish mother set in and I always felt like I needed to eat more. Being gluten free this wa a challenging for me. Though I didn't try not to gain weight, I only gained 30 pounds and was thrilled that I carried my girls to 38 weeks and that they were each over 5 pounds.
"Are you going to have a C-Section or go naturally?"
Apparently it has become very common to have a C-section with twins. Now I didn't know that. I planned on going naturally but unfortunately planning doesn't work and did I fact end up with a C-section.
"Were you surprised when you found out you were having twins?"
Again a hard question to answer. Most pregnancies are monitored so closely that there aren't any surprises. My mother didn't know she was having twins until a week before we were born but that was 33 years ago. With IVF, we knew we put 2 embryos in so we were thrilled that we were having twins but certainly not surprised. We knew at 7 weeks pregnant, it was twins.
"Are you worried/nervous about having twins?"
Of course not! I am a twin.
